On the drive to an amusement park last summer, my six-year-old began recalling details from our last visit—when he was not quite two. Vivid details. Startlingly accurate ones. He remembered being afraid of the giant tipping bucket in the water park, the free soda, and how much he’d loved riding the dog-shaped roller coaster.

Memory isn’t supposed to go back that far, at least not so clearly.
