Having a tangible copy of the essays that have encouraged and shaped my motherhood is something I am so thankful for. — Stephanie Blunt
A few weeks ago, several of the C+C team members met up for a little work/play retreat in Denver. The general vibe: eat, drink, laugh, cry, repeat.
This is the good stuff, I kept thinking to myself. This, being together. This, looking at each other’s faces and passing ceramic bowls of Mel’s chili around the table. This—the tangible, palpable, embodied experience of friendship.
Friday afternoon, as I carefully laid out printed spreads of our second magazine, a dramatic hush fell over the room. It almost made me laugh, how quiet everyone got, as if we were in the presence of a newborn baby—or something equally sacred—and not 36 sheets of 11 x 17 printer paper I had just ordered from a nearby FedEx Office.
Then again, how often do we get to hold our own creative work in our hands? How often do we get to watch our words and photos and art come to life—on paper, in full color—across a dining room table?
Is this process not at least a little sacred?
I didn’t realize I was holding my breath until someone whispered, “It’s beautiful,” and I felt myself exhale.
What a gift this magazine was. The day after it came in the mail, I woke up early, grabbed a cup of coffee, and read through most of it in one sitting. I laughed, cried, and ear-marked bits I wanted to come back to. It was magnificent. Beautiful to hold, beautiful to read, beautiful to look at. I am so excited to read the next volume.
- Hannah S, review of Volume I
Every time I open this magazine, I feel peace emanating from the pages. Thank you for creating something so lovely! -Naomi Barcroft
After a long day of parenting, being able to sit down and read such beautiful writing in my hand, instead of on a screen, is a breath of fresh air. It is truly a treat to set technology aside and read a magazine that speaks to the heart and soul of a mother. - Kristin S.
Coordinating schedules and flights and dietary restrictions for a dozen women is not an easy task. We left a combined 39 children at home (!) and had to search high and low to find a house with enough beds. And yet I know we would all agree: taking these online relationships into a real living room is worth every penny, every minute, every logistical puzzle that must be solved. There is simply no replacement. No equivalent.
Laughing and crying on the same couch is a thousand times better than Slack, better than email, better than texting, even better than—dare I say it—Voxer.1
In a similar vein, writing online is a profound gift. It’s affordable, accessible, collaborative, and allows our art to reach SO many women we otherwise couldn’t. And yet — holding these stories in our hands is a different experience. There is simply no replacement. No equivalent.
There is a joy in holding a beautiful hard copy of a magazine that just can’t quite be replicated with an online publication. I could tell every page was poured over with intention and care and I ate up every single word. - Duffey
